Erbil

Discover the world of the ancient Sumerians, Assyrians and Babylonians, starting in Erbil – Iraq’s fourth largest city. Located between two rivers and lined with minarets, museums and public parks, the Kurdish capital offers fertile ground for further travel through the “cradle of civilisation”.

The resorts, restaurants and tourist facilities are very much affordable and we feel more secure in Kurdistan unlike other areas in Iraq. It is very hot in Baghdad and work makes you feel even more tired and exhausted. So, such beautiful nature and waterfalls help you relax.

Despite being surrounded by war and instability, Erbil is a popular tourist destination for many people from Iraqi provinces and other cities in the Middle East because of its safety and religious tolerance. It is a diverse region where different ethnicities and faiths coexist without fear of persecution or discrimination.

The main attraction in Erbil is its ancient citadel and old bazaar that overlook the city. The fort is claimed to be the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the world. The citadel was granted World Heritage Site status in 2014. The mound on which it sits has evidence from Assyrian and Sumerian times and the structure is believed to contain the Temple of Ishtar, deep below the ground.

Quick info

Language: The main language spoken in Erbil is Kurdish. You will be able to find people to understand basic Arabic and basic English.

Currency: The currency of Erbil is Iraqi Dinars however it is often possible to pay in US Dollars, but expect a worse exchange rate.

Credit Cards and ATMs: There are ATMs however there are none in the city center itself – it is easier to find ATMs in the Christian Ainkawa neighborhood.

Plugs: The plugs in Antalya are type  C, D and G. The standard voltage is 230V, and the standard frequency is 50Hz. We recommend buying a universal adapter (make sure it has surge protection) and using a converter for hairdryers and hot tools.
